Since it is a hunting dog, it should not be left unsupervised with small children and toddlers outside the family. They love to be with them and play with them. The American Kennel Club has registered this breed in Miscellaneous Class since 2014 (as of March 2019) which is the last step to fully recognization. Portuguese Podengos were recognized in Europe by Federation Cynologique Internationale. Portuguese Podengos has a great sense of smell, sight, and hearing which they use while hunting and they were known as an excellent hunter. The medium-sized being slightly small was used for a small game like rabbit and vermin hunting. The Portuguese Podengos were developed in three sizes where the largest was used for deer and wild boar hunting. The Portuguese Podengos were believed to be used as a multi-purpose hunting dog by Phoenician of Africa in 600 BC and the Phoenician traders distributed it in Portugal in 700 BC. It has a slender, rectangular body which is strong and well-muscled. The eyes are expressive almond-shaped which comes in honey or brown colors. Portuguese Podengos have a large, erect, triangular ears and the head is Pyramid-shaped. Portuguese Podengos resembles the Ibizan Hound, Pharaoh Hound, and Cirneco dell’ Etna and it is believed that all these breeds share the same ancestry. Their coat also has two types: smooth and wirehaired. It comes in three sizes and the small and medium-sized were used for hunting small game like rabbit and large-sized were used for hunting big games like deer or even wild boar. The 2023 show was held at the NEC in Birmingham from 9 - 12 March with Podengos showing as part of Terrier and Hound Day on Saturday 11 March. In 1948, the Cruft family passed the running of the show to the Kennel Club, who have been responsible for it ever since. The Portuguese Podengo (pequeno) was first admitted to Crufts in 2009 and the classes have been hotly but amicably contested since then. The first show, started by the founder Charles Cruft, took place in 1891 and the famed Best in Show award was first given in 1928, going to a greyhound called Primley Sceptre.
